Matriarch Amy Reed stated that the grapes were bought at the BJ’s Wholesale Club in Langhorne. Everything seemed normal until Reed stated washing the grapes, which is when the Black Widow Spider caught her eye. “It was this black spider that kind of crawled up from inside the grapes. I was like ‘oh, that’s just disgusting.’ I could have eaten that spider.” Reed exclaimed.

After taking a closer look Reed noticed that this was not your ordinary spider but a much feared Black Widow. “I just grabbed it with a pair of pliers, one of its legs, and I missed it the first time. It fell onto its back and that’s when you could see the little red hourglass. I was like you have got to be kidding me.”

Reed then put the Black Widow Spider in a bag in the freezer so they would have proof to show the BJ’s Wholesale Club.

In response to finding a Black Widow in a bag of grapes sold by BJ’s Wholesale Club the grocer had the following to say; “…we have inspected all other grapes and discovered no spider or other insects. We are taking this matter extremely seriously and working with our vendor to take appropriate measures.”

In a final statement Reed stated that “My husband and I are both physicians and if it had bit me- I had lung surgery a week ago-if all of the sudden, I couldn’t breathe and had chest pain, like 100 things could be causing that..”.

All is well that ends well however and a valuable lesson can be learned here, which is to always thoroughly wash and inspect your produce!
